ARCHIVED: About the Umail upgrade
On this page:
Overview
In spring 2018, UITS upgraded Umail, the legacy student email system, to the Google at IU environment. Former students or alumni who separated from IU prior to March 11 were not upgraded to the Google at IU environment. However, all existing Umail accounts and their accompanying services (for example, Drive, Sites) will become inaccessible once Umail is retired on November 19, 2019. For more, see ARCHIVED: About the Umail retirement.
Gmail at IU is now ARCHIVED: accessible through IU and Google login portals, or by ARCHIVED: using a desktop or mobile client.
The upgrade makes your mail available with other Google applications (such as Sheets, Docs, Drive, and Groups), and allows you to log in with the same IU username and passphrase you use for other IU services.

Action you need to take
- Notify the people with whom you regularly communicate that your email address has changed to either
username@iu.edu
or your campus-specific address, and suggest that they update their personal address books. - If you exported your contacts to a
.csv
file while you still had Umail access, you can ARCHIVED: transfer them to your new account. - If you used
username@umail.iu.edu
to sign up for any outside apps (e.g., Instagram, Twitter, Slack, Dropbox), you'll need to change your email address in those apps tousername@iu.edu
(using your IU username). You typically do this in the account settings for each app. - ARCHIVED: Update the email configuration in your email client (e.g., Outlook, macOS Mail) and mobile devices.
Access to Umail apps
Access to Umail apps, including Drive and Calendar, was discontinued for current IU students on August 13, 2018. If you have files or other data that you need to recover from your Umail account, contact your campus Support Center.
Former students or alumni who separated from IU before March 11, 2018 may continue to use Umail and all associated Google apps (Drive, calendar, etc.) until Umail is retired on November 19, 2019.
