Overview
ARCHIVED: About Umail at IU (Retired) is scheduled to be retired on November 19, 2019. UITS is discontinuing the service due to its outdated infrastructure and to simplify email systems at IU. Once the service is discontinued, you will no longer be able to access your Umail account or the services associated with it (such as email, Drive files, and Sites).
The following information will help you back up your data, continue receiving mail, and retain access to third-party services registered with your Umail address.
Choose a new email account
If you don't already have one, UITS encourages you to create a Google account; this will simplify the backup process and make it easier for you to access your data. You can get an IU Proud Google account through the IU Alumni Association (IUAA) or create a personal one.
The following chart compares IU Proud and personal Google accounts:
IU Proud account | Personal Google account | |
---|---|---|
Description | Gives you a free IU-sponsored email address ( username@alumni.iu.edu ) and Google account via the IU Alumni Association |
Create or use an existing Google account |
Storage allotment | Extensive storage space that should easily accommodate your needs |
15 GB |
Retain an IU email address | Yes * | No |
Technical support | Dedicated | Limited |
* The IU Proud option will not let you keep your username@umail.iu.edu
address. However, mail sent to your IU-branded email address (@iu.edu
, @indiana.edu
, @iupui.edu
, etc.) will arrive in your IU Proud inbox. To set up forwarding from your IU-branded email address to your IU Proud inbox, see Mail delivery.
Alternatively, you may use or create a non-Google, third-party email account of your choosing. However, unlike the above options, you will not be able to readily transfer your Umail data to such accounts.
Transfer your data
Umail accounts are a type of Google account, and you can easily transfer data from one Google account to another.
- To move your Drive and mail data from your Umail account to either your IU Proud account or a personal Google account, see Import and export Google data.
- To transfer ownership of your Umail Google Sites to either your IU Proud account or a personal Google account, see ARCHIVED: Copy a Umail Google Site to a different Google account (former students only).
- To transfer your Umail calendar to either your IU Proud account or a personal Google account, see Import events to Google Calendar.
If you don't want to transfer your Drive, Calendar, Contacts, and Mail data to a separate Google account, you can download your data; refer to Export your app-specific data.
To preserve your Umail Google Sites, you need to transfer them to a separate Google account. For more, see ARCHIVED: Copy a Umail Google Site to a different Google account (former students only).
Mail delivery
Beginning November 19, 2019, you will not be able to forward mail from your Umail email address (username@umail.iu.edu
) to a different address of your choosing. This applies to all Umail account holders, including former students and alumni.
Continue using your IU-branded email address
Many people at IU have a username@iu.edu
email address. Additionally, you may have created an email address based on your campus affiliation (such as username@iupui.edu
, @iuk.edu
, etc.).
You can continue using your IU-branded email addresses by creating an IU Proud account and then setting up forwarding so that messages sent to your IU-branded email addresses arrive in your IU Proud inbox. To do this:
- Create an IU Proud account.
- Log into your IU Proud account to confirm that it has been created.
- Contact the UITS Accounts Administration team from your IU Proud email account and request to have mail forwarded from your IU-branded email addresses to your IU Proud account. Make sure to include your full email address in this request (for example,
username@alumni.iu.edu
), as your IU Proud username may be different from your IU username.Important:Do not contact the Accounts Administration team until you've verified that you can log into your IU Proud account. Doing so may cause your mail to bounce. - Once your request is completed, mail sent to your IU-branded email addresses will arrive in your IU Proud inbox.
If you do not create an IU Proud account, then you will no longer receive mail sent to your IU-branded email addresses (such as username@iu.edu
, username@iupui.edu
, etc.). Additionally, you will not be able to forward mail from your IU-branded email addresses to a personal email account.
Important considerations
- If you provided your IU email address to any third-party services (for example, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, financial institutions), you may need to change the address. If you have questions, contact your campus Support Center.
- Update any mail list subscriptions to use a different email address.
- If you use CRES, be sure to update your CRES credentials with another valid email account.
