ARCHIVED: Access your Exchange account on an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad

This content has been archived, and is no longer maintained by Indiana University. Information here may no longer be accurate, and links may no longer be available or reliable.

By connecting your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch) to your Indiana University Exchange account via Exchange ActiveSync, you can synchronize your email, contacts, and calendars over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Additionally, you can manage some aspects of your device through Outlook Web App, including wiping the device if it's lost or stolen; see Manage your Exchange ActiveSync device in Outlook on the web.

To set up your account, you should have a reliable Wi-Fi internet connection. When you finish entering your mail settings, your device will check them by connecting to your account. For more on making a Wi-Fi connection, see Connect to the IU wireless network in iOS (iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad).

Note:

Students who are admitted but not yet enrolled can only open web pages on eduroam or IU Secure. Other internet services (for example, email or chat clients, gaming services, etc.) will not work until you have enrolled status.

Note:
Before storing personal information in your iOS device, the University Information Security Office strongly recommends configuring a passcode. See Secure your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  1. From the "Home" screen:
    • iOS 14: Choose Settings > Mail > Accounts.
    • iOS 12 and 13: Choose Settings > Passwords & Accounts.
    • iOS 11: Choose Settings > Accounts & Passwords.
    • iOS 10: Choose Settings > Mail.
    • Earlier versions: Choose Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  2. In iOS 11 and later, select Add Account. In earlier iOS versions, select Accounts and then Add Account. On the "Add Account" screen, select Exchange or Microsoft Exchange.
  3. On the Exchange setup screen, enter the following:

Tap Next. If you're asked to sign into your account using Microsoft, tap Configure manually. If prompted, enter your IU passphrase in the "Password:" field and ews.exchange.iu.edu in the "Server:" field.

    Then tap Next or Continue.

  4. Once your device has verified your Exchange account settings, you will see options to turn on or off synchronization for Mail, Contacts, and Calendars. These settings will be turned on by default.
  5. Tap the Save or Done button. This will take you back to the Mail setup screen.

Your device should begin syncing with your Exchange account immediately.

Note:
If you are having trouble sending and receiving mail on your iOS device, you may want to remove the email account and then re-add it. Check your device instructions for assistance.
Note:
IU allows Exchange partnerships with up to 10 mobile devices. If you experience issues setting up an Exchange account on your mobile device, you may want to verify how many devices you have partnered with Exchange; see Manage your Exchange ActiveSync device in Outlook on the web.
