Overview and recommendations

These instructions describe how to manually configure your iOS device to access your Indiana University email through IMAP:

When synchronized with your Mac or Windows computer, your device can automatically configure email settings to access IU email systems. For more, see iPhone support.

To set up your account, you should have a reliable Wi-Fi Internet connection. When you finish entering your mail settings, the device will check them by connecting to your account. For more, see Connect to the IU wireless network in iOS (iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad).

For help and information about Apple mobile devices, see iPhone Support, iPod touch Support, and iPad Support.

Preparing your Imail or Umail account

Because your IU passphrase will not work with Imail or Umail on your mobile device, you must first create a vendor password; see ARCHIVED: Imail vendor password or ARCHIVED: Umail vendor password.

Enabling IMAP for Imail

IMAP is enabled for your Imail account after you log in for the first time; see ARCHIVED: Accessing your Imail.

Enabling IMAP for Umail

Configuring IMAP

Note:
Before storing personal information in your iOS device, the University Information Security Office strongly recommends configuring a passcode. See Secure your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Once you have prepared your account, you can configure your device to make an IMAP connection:

If you are connecting to your Exchange account, your device will try to create a secure (SSL) connection to the Exchange server. If it cannot create an SSL connection, it will try a non-SSL connection. To override the SSL setting, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars. Select your Exchange account, tap Account Info, and then toggle the Use SSL slider. On this screen, you can also verify if SSL is already enabled.

  1. From the "Home" screen, choose Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Add Account... > Other. On the "Other" screen, tap Add Mail Account.
  2. Next to "Name", enter your real name.
  3. Next to "Address", enter your email address.

In iOS, if you enter your email address as username@indiana.edu, it will automatically be processed as an Exchange account. Cyrus accounts only work properly if you enter your email address as username@imap.iu.edu, where username is your Network ID username.

If you are unsure of your exact IU email address, see Your IU email address.

  4. Next to "Description", enter a description of your account (e.g., IU email).
  5. Next to "Host Name", enter the appropriate address for your email service:
    Imail outlook.office365.com
    Umail imap.gmail.com
    Exchange imap.exchange.iu.edu
  6. Next to "Username" and "Password", enter the appropriate settings for your email service:
      Username Password
    Imail
username@imail.iu.edu , where username is your Network ID username
    Your Windows vendor password
    Umail
username@umail.iu.edu , where username is your Network ID username
    Your Umail vendor password
Cyrus (Webmail) Your Network ID username Your Network ID passphrase
Exchange Your Network ID username Your Network ID passphrase
  7. Next to "SMTP" or "Outgoing Host", enter the appropriate address for your email service:
    Imail smtp.office365.com
    Umail smtp.gmail.com
    Exchange mail-relay.iu.edu
  8. If prompted, next to "Username" and "Password", enter the appropriate settings for your email service (see step 6).
  9. The remaining settings are optional. Enter them if you wish, and then tap Save.
  10. The device may fail when it tries to validate your settings. Tap OK to clear any error messages, and then tap Save again.
  11. Return to the "Home" screen, and then tap Mail. Your email should appear in a few moments.

If you're using Cyrus, you need to make a further configuration change to ensure that mail sent from the device is saved on the Cyrus server. After you have configured your account as above, to change your mail settings, see ARCHIVED: In Cyrus mail, how do I find messages sent from my iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad?

Note:
If you are having trouble sending and receiving mail on your iOS device, you may want to remove the email account and then re-add it. Check your device instructions for assistance.
