Before you begin

At Indiana University, most faculty and staff use UniCom (via Skype for Business and/or a USB or IP phone) for their office phones. Unless you use an older (landline) telephone, see ARCHIVED: Make a phone call using UniCom/Skype for Business for instructions. To make a call from a landline phone in an on-campus office or residence, see below.

Make a local call

To make a local call from a campus landline telephone:

  • To call another campus number, dial the last five digits of the telephone number; for example, for 855-1234, dial 5-1234.
  • To call an off-campus local number, dial 9 and then the full ten-digit telephone number, including the area code.

Make a long distance or international call from on campus

For IU faculty and staff, domestic long distance calls for university business are included as part of the basic bundle of services from UITS. For current rates for international business calls, call 812-855-2111 or 317-274-3004. International calls require an Authorization Code.

Note:
Direct-dial long distance is not available in campus housing at IUB and IUPUI. However, students, faculty, and staff may take advantage of special pricing for AT&T personal cellular service; see About AT&T discounts.

To make a long distance or international business call from an office landline phone:

  1. Dial 9 to access an outside line.
  2. Dial 1 for domestic calls, or 011 for international calls.
  3. Dial the area code for domestic calls, or the country code (and the city code, if required) for an international call.
  4. Dial the telephone number.
  5. For international calls, when you hear a "stutter" dial tone (two short tones followed by a long tone), dial your Authorization Code.

To make a toll-free call from on campus, dial 9, then 1, and then the number.

Make a long distance campus-to-campus call

You can dial calls between Indiana University Bloomington and IUPUI directly, using only the last five digits of the phone number (for example, 5-1234).

For other business campus-to-campus calls, dial as you would any other long-distance number (see above).

Make a long distance call from off campus

If you are a faculty or staff member and wish to make a long distance call from off campus, follow the instructions on your IU calling card. To obtain an IU calling card, contact your telecommunications coordinator.

If you do not know who your telecommunications coordinator is, at IU Bloomington, call 812-856-2287, option 3; at IUPUI, call 317-274-3004, option 3. You can also email Telecom and Network Services.
